Schönbrunn Christmas Market: glittering lights and traditional handicrafts
Exquisite collectors’ items as Advent décor, Christmas surprises and special souvenirs await visitors to Schönbrunn from 19 November to 26 December. In addition to the record seventy-five and more exhibitors from Austria and neighbouring countries, the festive opening, an invitation to join the benefit public choir and a Christmas workshop set up for the first time, the special editions introduced in 2010 will this year feature unique items from ten craftsmen and women. Anticipation of the Christmas celebrations combines at the Schönbrunn Christmas Market with handicrafts that keep up a tradition dating back to the Habsburg era.

Romance of Christmas in an imperial setting
Every year visitors from all over the world are enchanted by the seasonal atmosphere of the Schönbrunn Christmas Market. The glittering lights of the Christmas tree in front of the baroque Schönbrunn Palace provide the ideal setting for the romantic Advent village with the enticement of delicious food, savoury aromas and Austrian craftsmanship. A delicate fragrance of gingerbread, punch and roast chestnuts wafts over the courtyard in front of the palace, offering a haven of Christmas repose from the hustle and bustle of the city.
A total of about 80 exhibitors will be presenting Austrian handicrafts and other items from 19 November to 26 December 2011. Visitors can also enjoy culinary specialities, concerts and a children’s programme as they shop around in the friendly atmosphere of the market.
As the year comes to a close, the Christmas Market will for the second time be transformed into a New Year’s Market. On 27 December the booths will be redecorated and the market will open again from 28 December to 1 January 2012 with special New Year’s items to supplement the traditional handicrafts.
