Christmas Market Schloss Schönbrunn Celebrates 30 Years

Anna Herczeg

With festively decorated stalls, a Christmas tree ablaze with lights, and a diverse program of events, the 30th Christmas Market Schloss Schönbrunn promises a joyous atmosphere.

From 18 November 2023, to 4 January 2024, the Parade Court in front of Schloss Schönbrunn transforms into a winter wonderland for young and old alike. Amidst soul-stirring melodies and the scent of roasted almonds and punch, visitors will experience an unforgettable Christmas extravaganza. Eighty stalls featuring a variety of exhibitors from Austria and neighboring countries will offer traditional and high-quality arts and crafts, unique Christmas decorations, nostalgic toys, and more. Long-standing exhibitors and exciting new artisans come together at Schönbrunn to showcase their products.

"We are thrilled and proud to celebrate the 30th Christmas Market at Schloss Schönbrunn with our exhibitors and guests this year. We are especially grateful for the loyalty of our regular visitors and exhibitors. We have been lucky to host 164 different exhibitors over the past 30 years, six of them from the very beginning. A heartfelt thank you to all!",

says Gabriela Schmidle, Managing Director and Founder.

Christmas Tree and Culinary Delights

As a tradition, the Christmas market will feature a splendidly adorned, 18-meter-tall Christmas tree – a gift from the Österreichische Bundesforste – adorned with 1,000 sparkling LED lights that will make the eyes of both children and adults gleam. Moreover, visitors can embark on a culinary journey, indulging in savory dishes like stuffed dumplings, oven-baked and spiral-cut potatoes, soups, cheesy spätzle, old Hungarian kettle goulash, and sweet treats like Kaiserschmarrn, freshly baked waffles, and fragrant Germknödel. Vegetarian and vegan foodies can also look forward to delightful vegetable soups, lentil stews, rosemary potatoes, spinach, feta cheese spätzle, and much more.

Festive Advent Program

Children can look forward to an exciting interactive rally and solve tricky puzzles together with stilt-walking shepherds. Another highlight is the annual visit of St. Nicholas on 5 to 6 January 2023, at the Parade Court. This year, a special addition to the market is the Court Carousel, made from nostalgic furniture and carriage elements, which can be set in motion by pedalling.

Choirs, a cappella groups, and brass ensembles will provide daily free live performances in front of the grand Christmas tree, creating a festive Advent atmosphere. Guests can also explore the handcrafted nativity scene, crafted by Franz Oberschneider from East Tyrol, featuring over 250 figurines on the stage, as well as the Advent calendar in the centre of the market, which traditionally opens one door each day from 1 to 24 December, showcasing art pieces from the exhibitors.

Happy New Year

The New Year’s Market Schloss Schönbrunn promises a magical atmosphere to welcome the new year in style. From 26 to 27 December, the Christmas Market will transform overnight into the New Year’s Market. The assortment will be expanded until 4 January with lucky charms like chimney sweeps, horseshoes, fly agarics, and little pigs. Diaries and calendars for 2024, as well as specially designed bath bombs with New Year's decorations and hand-blown champagne glasses, herald the upcoming year. Dixie, swing, and jazz ensembles will provide the musical accompaniment into the new year.
